Diffuse Energy - Wind Turbine Controller

 
 

If you hit the ground running with everything you do, you’re sure to find some serendipity along the way.  

This has been the case for how local renewable energy innovators Diffuse Energy came to commence their product journey.

For Joss, James, and Sam, the decision to develop and commercialise a novel compact wind turbine happened quickly. Late last year, their combined expertise in mechanical engineering and renewable energy research worked in turning a disruptive idea into a start-up, and today, a field-ready Minimum Viable Product. 

As nimble engineers themselves, Diffuse understand the value in rapid development. They also share a commitment in sourcing parts and service providers locally, allowing them to not only support local industry, but to also ensure the development process moves forward at a steady and manageable pace.   

Rapid development for when the unpredictable happens

Unfortunately, no project is without it’s curveballs, and mid-way through their turbine’s development, an unforeseen need for something custom built quickly made itself apparent. Although the hardware for the turbine’s unique integrated diffuser could be developed in-house, other components - typical of most product development projects - needed to be sourced off the shelf. 

The turbine’s controller - the device necessary to control the speed and to safely deliver the power of their customer’s turbine - was a prime example of these product components. Unfortunately, the off the shelf parts were not suitable for what they had envisioned. Nothing in the market would integrate with their customers’ existing battery management systems - or at least, not to the level of efficiency and product quality reflected in the other components of their novel product.

This is where Diffuse approached us. Due to the unpredictable nature of their project set-back, we knew our clients needed something of quality, and fast. James’ former industry relationship with Heath (our Head of Technology) provided the team with the confidence that they would have a reliable and rapid development service, where an understanding for their product would ensure their needs could be met without a need for over-explanations.

Thanks to some innovative rapid prototyping processes, consistent communication, and transparency across the entire development lifecycle, the project was executed in under six months. In returning their rapid project back on track, the design and development of their turbine controller took less than one month worth of working days within this period. 

Our nimble approach to product development ensured a high-quality, custom turbine controller that will not only serve the core control functions of the product but will now additionally have the capacity to accomodate 46 Voltage measurements across their customer’s energy managements systems. Going forward with their product, this gives the turbine controller capacity to support planned efficiency improvements and integration with systems from other providers.

Where are they now?

The Diffuse Energy Wind Turbine is currently undergoing the first round of field testing. We are working on a roadmap for the next iteration of custom development, allowing for us to further augment the controller device, best positioning it for market entry.
